ENDS 02 JUNE 2026

The SAICE Environmental Engineering Division invites researchers, practitioners, thought leaders, students, government and policy makers to attend the Annual SEED Conference, scheduled for 3rd and 4th June 2026 at The Maslow, Sandton.
The SEED Conference will highlight the critical role engineers play in reducing the environmental footprint of infrastructure development and everyday activities.
The Conference Theme is “Engineering for a Sustainable and Regenerative Future: Reducing Environmental Footprints in a Rapidly Urbanising World”.
As rapid population growth and urbanisation accelerate in key regions, the demand for infrastructure development continues to rise. In response, governments are facing increasingly complex environmental challenges, including global warming, climate variability, declining air quality, desertification, land degradation, unmanaged solid waste, and the contamination and scarcity of water resources.
This Conference will highlight the appropriate choices that engineers can make in tackling these issues, highlighting innovative strategies, informed decision-making, and sustainable design practices that promote environmental stewardship.

Academic and researcher in civil and environmental engineering at Wits University with strong experience across wastewater treatment, pollution management, sanitation, bioprocessing, catalysis, membrane technology, modelling, and sustainable engineering solutions.

Senior lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand focusing on water quality modelling, water and wastewater treatment, sustainable sanitation, waste-to-energy conversion, and systems thinking for infrastructure development.

Senior Geotechnical Engineer at SRK Consulting specializing in geotechnical, tailings, and mining projects across multiple infrastructure sectors, with recognised leadership and award-winning professional contributions.

Hans studied civil engineering the University of Cape Town and completing his BSc in 1981. In 1991 he completed a Graduates Diploma in Engineering also at the University of Cape Town. After graduating he first worked for Clifford Harris for 8 years designing temporary works and supervising projects. Since then, he worked for Department of Agriculture for 30 years mostly in the post of “Soil Conservation Engineer” for the Western Cape where he was responsible for the design of many soil conservation weirs, as well as the development of the use of groynes for riverbank stabilization. In this time, he learned to use indigenous wetland vegetation as an essential component of erosion stabilization projects in rivers and wetlands, and thereby reduce the scale of engineered interventions. In 2016 he was one of a team of authors who produced a Water Research Commission report on the rehabilitation of rivers and wetlands in South Africa. In 2026 he has co-authored a second WRC publication “Let’s fix our rivers”. 6 years ago, he started his own consultancy HansKingSRS (Pty) Ltd and has worked on a variety of river stabilization projects country-wide. Hans is a Fellow of the South African Institute of Civil Engineers (SAICE) as well as a Fellow of the South African Institute of Agricultural Engineers (SAIAE).
