About Seed

Your professional home for environmental engineering in South Africa.

Identifies training opportunities and represents SEED at SAICE Academy meetings to support professional development.

SAICE’s Mission Statement is to advance professional knowledge & improve the practice of civil engineering. The leader of the Education and Training portfolio would assist in identifying suitable training courses that can be offered to the SEED members in the specialized field on Environmental Engineering. The member would also attend the SAICE Academy meetings held alternate monthly to keep the committee informed on to report on behalf of the division.

What is the purpose of the Education and Training portfolio within SAICE SEED?

The Education and Training portfolio exists to help SEED members grow professionally by identifying relevant environmental engineering training opportunities and linking them to SAICE’s broader development mission. SAICE states that, through its divisions, branches and committees, it aims to “advance professional knowledge and improve the practice of civil engineering in South Africa,” while also providing continued learning opportunities and industry networking for members. In practice, this means the portfolio leader should look for suitable short courses, workshops, seminars, and other learning opportunities that strengthen environmental engineering skills within the division.

Engaging with the SAICE Academy is important because the Academy is one of SAICE’s formal platforms for professional learning and CPD-related training. SAICE lists face-to-face courses, online courses, self-paced learning, candidate academy training, in-house training, and partner courses as part of its Academy offering. SAICE also explains that CPD activities can include courses, workshops, lectures, seminars, congresses, and refresher courses, each requiring proper validation for CPD recognition. For SEED, this makes Academy engagement valuable because it helps the division identify credible, structured learning opportunities that are aligned with professional development needs in environmental engineering.

This portfolio supports environmental engineering professionals by making sure their training needs are represented inside SAICE structures and by helping the division stay informed about learning and development opportunities. That matters because SAICE positions SEED as a division connected to sustainability and environmental engineering practice, and SAICE’s own publications describe the Environmental Engineering Division as advocating for sustainable infrastructure and systems thinking. By identifying relevant courses and reporting back from SAICE Academy engagements, the portfolio helps members stay current, improve competence, and participate more effectively in the evolving environmental engineering field in South Africa.
